CCSD Wellness Initiative
Healthier people are better learners and thinkers!
Charleston County School District (CCSD) joined local health and community partners to launch a district-wide program —the CCSD Wellness Initiative—designed to promote the health and well-being of students and employees.
The Wellness Initiative ensures that every school has an active School Wellness Committee that develops school-based activities and partnerships to enhance the wellness of everyone.
- Physical Well-Being
- Social-Emotional Well-Being
- Establishing a Wellness Culture
- Family-Friendly Policies
- Employee Connections
The Wellness Initiative builds on best practices and strengthens collaborations between the district, its schools, and local health partners.
To establish Health and Wellness as an educational priority for the students and staff of the Charleston County School District.
CCSD is committed to providing a school environment that promotes and protects children's health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity. Our mission is to promote wellness in all schools and for all students and employees in the district.
- Provide and promote healthy nutritional options for meals and snacks in every school and every workplace across the district.
- Encourage and monitor physical activity throughout the district.
- Create a culture of health and wellness in every aspect of the CCSD community, including policies, facilities, scheduling, expectations, and goals.
The CCSD Wellness Initiative has been growing by leaps and bounds since being formed three years ago. In our first and second years, over 50 schools formed Wellness Committees and participated in the school health survey.
Each school received $1,000 in funding through the generous support of The Boeing Company, and thus began our partnership with the MUSC Lean Team and the MUSC Boeing Center for Children’s Wellness. Schools use the funds to build their individual wellness programs and goals. Last year, Harbor View Elementary School received an extra $1,000 as a bonus for their top score on the wellness "checklist" survey.
This year, we have seen a dramatic increase in participation – from 52 to 73 participating schools. Wellness is spreading across the county! Many schools now have seasoned, year-round wellness programs with multi-faceted initiatives encompassing things such as fitness, gardening, healthy cooking and more.
Our Second Annual Wellness Roundtable for teachers and administrators is being held on May 22, 2013, and promises to be a huge success, with dozens of vendors scheduled to provide tips and resources for our school wellness committees. The winners and runners up of this year's survey competition will be announced, and Boeing will present the district with a $74,000 check to be distributed among our participating schools, with that $1,000 "bonus" going to the winning school once again.
