OVERVIEW: Septima P. Clark Corporate Academy is a program designed to address the high school drop out rate in the Charleston County School District (CCSD). The program is characterized by small class sizes, individualized support, and a robust mentoring program. Faculty and staff provide a nurturing environment that enables most students to earn a high school diploma. Although students technically remain enrolled in their home schools, the students attend classes at Clark.
While Clark does not offer students more credits than a traditional high school, student schedules are created to get students to 24 credits, and therefore graduation, as soon as possible. Extended day classes are offered after school to help students progress quickly towards graduation.
Clark Academy is a magnet school. Students complete an application and undergo an interview before being accepted to attend. Invitations to continue attending our school involve students demonstrating appropriate behavior and not failing more than one course. We have zero tolerance for illegal substances and violence.
BUILDING PROGRAM STATUS: NO PROJECTS
EXTRACURRICULAR OFFERINGS: None, Students attending Clark may participate in sports and activities at their home schools.
FACULTY INFORMATION: Sixteen highly qualified and certified faculty members teach at Septima P. Clark Academy. Forty percent of our faculty have earned their Masters in Education; ten percent hold National Board. All academic, visual and performing arts teachers are involved in professional organizations representing their respective disciplines.
UNIQUE ASSETS: Septima P. Clark Corporate Academy brings together a diverse population of students and faculty. Our small size and quiet location allow faculty and staff members to know every student personally.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Clark Academy was founded by Communities in Schools (CIS) which champions all youth to stay in school by connecting the best resources with the needs of students, their families and schools. CIS also sponsors our mentoring program. Through this program the school pairs community volunteer mentors with students in need of a positive relationship with a caring adult. Our annual Teen Summit invites community members to come to the school and speak to our students about issues concerning their everyday lives and the importance of making good decisions. We welcome and encourage parental involvement and community volunteers.
