SENDS STUDENTS TO: Students who graduate from the Montessori Community School of Charleston (MCSC) at the sixth grade receive automatic acceptance to CE Williams Middle School in the seventh grade. However, MCSC students have chosen to attend a variety of other middle schools including their neighborhood middle schools and the School of the Arts.
OUTSTANDING FEATURES/PROGRAMS: MCSC is committed to creating a Montessori environment that supports the personal growth and academic success of each student at our school. A Montessori education combines structure and discipline with the flexibility of meeting the individual needs of every child. We offer multi-age classrooms, (starting with a tuition-based program for three year olds), a full complement of Montessori hands-on materials, Montessori certified teachers, genuine integration of academic subjects, a non-competitive atmosphere and a Montessori curriculum that encourages the students to be self-directed and independent. Studies of nature and the environment, frequent outings into the community, and a camping trip for the oldest students are important elements of the students’ time at MCSC. In terms of accountability, consistently high PACT and MAP scores provide objective data as to the success of the Montessori method.
FACULTY INFORMATION: All MCSC teachers are both South Carolina certified and Montessori certified. A high percentage of teachers hold master degrees and National Board Teacher Certification.
UNIQUE ASSETS: MCSC is a county-wide magnet school. The small enrollment and high level of parent volunteerism helps to create a community-oriented atmosphere.
