OUTSTANDING FEATURES/PROGRAMS: Alice Birney Middle School utilizes a full range of academic options to ensure excellent reading, writing, and math skills in preparation for a rigorous high school experience.

Students who achieve at or above grade level are enrolled in honors classes across the curriculum and are invited to participate in Algebra I and Spanish I for high school credit during the 8th grade.  Seventh and eighth graders may also earn a half a high school credit in Keyboarding during their exploratory time.

Additionally, we have the only Gifted and Talented (G/T) class offered in a CCSD middle school that is not embedded in another academic class.  We have also created a G/T Development class to give students who demonstrate gifted tendencies, but have not had the necessary academic experiences early on to hone these gifts.  Over half of last year’s G/T Development students successful met G/T standards by the close of the school year and are now eligible for Gifted and Talented services.

Students with reading needs are provided targeted assistance through one or more interventions including Voyager Reading, Corrective Reading, Reading REWARDS, and Soar to Success.  Math interventions include TransMath, Voyager Math, and Connecting Math.

BUILDING PROGRAM STATUS: NO PROJECTS

EXTRACURRICULAR OFFERINGS: Our school is fortunate to have wonderful partnerships with both the North Charleston Recreation Department and Stall HS.  Through these partnerships, our students are able to participate in soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading.  ABMS students compete against other middle school and Junior Varsity teams in the area through these sports teams.

Students with an interest in developing their leadership skills can participate in Student Council or our male and female service/leadership clubs, ARMs and CLASS.  New after school clubs and opportunities are added annually based on student interests, including fine arts, crafts, careers, and community service.

Tutoring is available to all students each week. Sessions are held by our teachers at no cost.  We offer free after school bus transportation three days a week.  The after school bus departs ABMS at 5PM on scheduled days.  The tutoring and transportation schedule is mailed to families so that parents know when help is available in every subject area, in every grade.

SPECIAL INCENTIVES: A proud Green Ribbon Positive Behavior Intervention School, Alice Birney utilizes an extensive system of honors and rewards for excellence, including academic achievement, growth on benchmark exams, behavior, school attendance, and citizenship.  Our staff uses “Dare to SOAR!” credits to recognize students on a daily basis in academic and social life.  Additionally, students participate in Success Awards and SOAR Celebrations depending on their overall performance in a wide variety of areas.
