Teacher Hiring Procedures & Current Vacancies

How to Apply
- All Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a Work Visa or Work Permit.
- Applying for Teacher positions by job type (certification area) will allow you to submit your résumé and application, even if no vacancies currently exist for the area(s) in which you are certified, and will notify the Teacher Employment Department of the positions in which you are interested.
- Principals/Hiring Managers will review all applicants who applied to each job type (certification area) and select applicants to interview and hire.
- Once you have submitted your résumé and application, you may follow up by calling the Principals/Hiring Managers for each school to inquire regarding the status of the vacancy and to request an interview.
- You may log in as a first time user and apply for job types (certification areas) for which you are certified. If you are currently employed as a certified teacher, please apply as a first time user to the applicable job type (certification area). Your information will be available to all Principals/Hiring Managers for consideration. If you already have an on-line application, you can log in as a previous visitor and update your application, résumé, and apply to job types (certification areas) for the applicable school year.

Submit Supporting Documents
A complete file must be registered with the Human Resources Teacher Employment Office. Submit the following froms and information to have a completed teacher application file by fax 843-937-6383 or mail: HR Teacher Employment, 75 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
- Current Teacher Certification, verification of pending certification from your college or PACE Eligibility Letter
- Signed Certification Information Letter
- Appropriate Test Scores (copy accepted)
- Appropriate Transcripts (unofficial accepted)
- Two (2) Confidential Reference Forms or Placement File for New Teachers
- References – must include your current or most recent supervisor. References should include classroom cooperating teacher and student teaching supervisor for beginning teachers. A college or university placement/career file that contains these references may be used for new teachers. You must complete the middle portion of the Confidential Reference Form and include the position for which you are applying. The person completing the reference form must mail it to HR Teacher Employment, 75 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or fax it to (843) 937-6383.
- CCSD will accept confidential references placed on the State of South Carolina Teacher Application.
- References – must include your current or most recent supervisor. References should include classroom cooperating teacher and student teaching supervisor for beginning teachers. A college or university placement/career file that contains these references may be used for new teachers. Notes:
- Out-of-state certificates may/may not equate to South Carolina certification areas (i.e., S.C. Elementary certification is for grade levels 2– 6, and Early Childhood certification is for grade levels K-3). Please consider this, as your application may not be submitted to the Principal for all positions to which you apply based on South Carolina certification designation.
- Each year your application must be updated. Applicants must update their applicant profile and résumé online, submit a Confidential Reference Form from their most current supervisor (a Confidential Reference Form from the last CCSD supervisor if the applicant is a current CCSD employee), as well as forward any additional materials needed to keep the file current.
Employment Clearance
With the completion of a Teacher Application File, in most cases, applicants will be given their clearance status upon the review of their application file and will be emailed an Interview Clearance Form. HR Teacher Employment will contact the applicant for additional information if necessary. HR Teacher Employment reserves the right to process applicants for clearance in a priority order, based on the needs of the Charleston County School District.
Interview
If you are selected for an interview, the hiring manager will inform you what documentation you should bring to the interview. SOME APPLICANTS MAY NOT BE INTERVIEWED FOR THE AVAILABLE POSITION.
If Recommended for Hire
If selected for a position, a background check will be conducted. The new employee will be required to attend New Employee Orientation as the first day of employment with the Charleston County School District. At that time, the new employee will be required to complete hiring paperwork and present the necessary identification from the Lists of Acceptable Documents and the TB test on the DHEC 1420 form.
