Durham Bus Services provides bus transportation to students living within the school attendance zone, but outside the 1.5-mile walk zone or who live in areas predetermined to be hazardous for walk-in students.

Parents are responsible for their child's safety to and from the bus stop. All students are asked to be at the bus stops ten minutes before the schedule pick-up times.

Stops are established in accordance with South Carolina State Department Rules and Regulations. Stops are placed up to ½ mile from a child's home. No stops are scheduled within 1.5 miles of the school unless it is predetermined to be hazardous for walk-in students. Drivers are only allowed to make stops listed on the route sheets. Parents or students should not request drivers to pick-up or drop-off at unauthorized stops.

When requesting a pick-up for a special needs student, parents/guardians must go to the student's school to complete required paperwork. Transportation will not be provided to special needs students without the proper paperwork.

Careful analysis of existing concerns of parents and the community resulted in more effective ways to organize and manage the delivery of bus services to students in Charleston County.

To provide more localized service for the 1,000 square mile area covered by approximately 181 regular routes, 54 magnet, 78 special needs routes, 36 No Child Left Behind routes, and 12 charter routes, Durham Bus Services has three area offices: Area A (District 1 & 2) located in Mt. Pleasant; Area B (District 4, 10 & 20) located in North Charleston; and Area C (Districts 3, 9 & 23) located on Johns Island. Six driver/bus locations in the county are utilized to provide efficient and convenient sites for drivers to check-in and pick-up their buses to begin routes. These locations are McClellanville, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston/Lincolnville, James Island, Johns Island and Baptist Hill/Edisto.
