AC Corcoran's "Walk to School Day" was a great success! It was a collaborative event with donations from MUSC and the SC Safe Kids organization, Engine 9 of the North Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Sheriff Office, and Piggly Wiggly.A.C. Corcoran Elementary

The "Walk to School Day" event at A.C. Corcoran Elementary was a great success! It was a collaborative effort made possible with donations from MUSC and the SC Safe Kids organization, Engine 9 of the North Charleston Fire Department, North Charleston Sheriff Office, and Piggly Wiggly. The students received pencils, bracelets, safety reflectors, and stickers which were handed out by teachers and staff of A.C. Corcoran. Parent Teacher Association (PTA) representatives helped support the walk by handing out fruit donated by Piggly Wiggly. The entire community came together to promote physical fitness and safety for all children at A.C. Corcoran!

Garrett Academy of Technology celebrated Cultural Diversity Week from October 12 though October 16. The event was a school-wide project focused on raising cultural awareness. An art exhibit celebrated the traditions and customs across the world. Throughout the week, language, art and global studies teachers incorporated cultural activities into their lesson plans. Students conducted projects on other countries, for which they researched the languages, cultures, dress, and economies of these nations. Students were enthusiastic about the learning opportunities afforded by the exciting week.

On September 29, Harbor View Elementary hosted their first Everyday Math Game Night. The faculty and staff considered the evening a huge success with over 350 students, parents and grandparents in attendance.Harbor View Elementary

On September 29, Harbor View Elementary hosted their first "Everyday Math Game Night." The evening was met with tremendous participation, with over 350 students, parents and grandparents in attendance. Teachers set up multiple stations with game materials and answered questions about the school's new math series. Students rotated through the stations and taught their parents and grandparents how to play the fun, interactive, and educational Everyday Math games.

At Laing Middle School- Science and Technology, real-world science connections and the infusion of technology across academic and related arts curricula prepare students to be 21st Century achievers. One course included in the program is Marine Science.Laing Middle

Students recently participated in the Discover SCUBA class through Charleston SCUBA and the city recreation department pool in order to directly apply their classroom studies.

Every year, each Carolinian uses the equivalent of approximately one 100-foot-tall Douglas fir tree in paper and wood products. The Student Council of Midland Park Elementary is continuing to raise environmental consciousness during the 2009-2010 school year. Every other week, this lead body of students collects recycling bins from approximately 60 classrooms and educates the Midland Park community on the importance of protecting the environment.

This year, students at Julian Mitchell Math and Science Elementary are participating in the Charleston Book Buddy program. Mitchell Elementary

This year, students at Julian Mitchell Math and Science Elementary are participating in the Charleston Book Buddy program. The one-on-one tutorial program serves 32 first and second graders who can benefit from extra support in reading. Volunteers from throughout the Charleston community work with their "buddy" twice a week for 45 minutes on skills to improve comprehension, writing and vocabulary development. The students have increased their skills during the program, and the tutors convey how serving as tutors has continued to enrich their lives.

At the beginning of the month, the Whitesides PTA celebrated Family Fiesta Night. Students, teachers, and parents enjoyed the festive mood and shared a delicious dinner. October was a busy month at Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary! As the students and staff anticipate the opening of the new building in 2010, WalMart awarded the school $2,500 for new playground equipment. Assistant Principal Cindi Perez announced that educator Alice Light has been selected as the school's 2010 Teacher of the Year. The local reading council of the South Carolina State Reading Association met recently to kicking off its membership drive and plan for the school year. The Charleston Reading Council supports the district's ongoing emphasis on literacy by focusing professionals on literacy- related topics such as professional resources, appropriate books to read to children, and the latest reading research. Charleston County School District and the Charleston Reading Council

The local reading council of the South Carolina State Reading Association met recently to kick off its membership drive and plan for the school year. The Charleston Reading Council supports the district's ongoing emphasis on literacy by focusing professionals on literacy-related topics such as professional resources, appropriate books to read to children, and the latest reading research. This year, the council is engaged in an international project called "Gifts to Ghana." The state reading conference is always held in February during which the Charleston County Distinguished Reading Teacher is recognized.
