On October 17, the chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) of EXCEL Academy at Morningside Middle attended the South Carolina FBLA State Fall Leadership Rally at Lower Richland High School in Hopkins.  This rally is held each year to improve leadership abilities, increase knowledge of FBLA programs and competitive events, and expand career preparation skills.  Out of eight competing chapters, EXCEL was the only middle school to advance to the final three in the State Chant Competition, and the EXCEL girls brought home the second place prize!

On October 13, W.B. Goodwin Elementary staff members worked at McDonald’s at the Montague Avenue location as part of a fundraiser and outreach opportunity. McTeacher’s Night is a combined effort between local schools and McDonald’s Restaurants to support education.  Goodwin teachers and administrators worked side-by-side with McDonald’s employees.  The school will receive 15% of the proceeds, which will help fund field trips and students' Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) incentives.

Mary Ford Elementary is proud to welcome teacher candidates in the College of Charleston MAT Early Childhood program. This is the graduate students' first field experience, and they will be observing in the Mary Ford classrooms with a focus on language and literacy learning. They will work with students, read aloud to the class, monitor student work, and accompany students to the library. Each graduate student will also focus his or her observation attention on a specific child, whom will be interviewed about his or her reading practices.

Minnie Hughes Elementary students in Ms. Amber Inabinet's class held an assembly program about the core value word of the month "respect." The children presented the program to the entire student body during the day on October 14 and had an encore performance at the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting that evening. The students did an incredible job conveying this invaluable concept.

Percy Livingston of the Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Shop is the Division of Operations' Employee of the Month for October! Livingston has been working for the district for over 25 years. He is described as a dedicated employee and a go-getter, who always strives to improve classroom conditions. He often spends long hours on rooftops in sweltering temperatures, ensuring that education will not suffer because of broken HVAC units.

Third graders at Springfield Elementary and Susan G. Boykin Academy recently learned the importance and use of Swahili.  The students participated in making introductions, greeting friends and relatives, and asking for food at the table in Kiswahili.  During art class, students created posters illustrating different Swahili words and phrases. The students’ posters were on display during a workshop on Friday.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2009, 50 students at R. B. Stall High were rewarded for their academic achievement on the 2009 Spring HSAP. The students toured the Charleston harbor, visited Fort Sumter, and had lunch. The awards ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Charleston County Library. Associate Superintendent Louis Martin and Assistant Principal Larry Adkins presented the students with their medals.

On Wednesday, October 14, Sullivan’s Island Elementary hosted Marjory Heath Wentworth, Poet Laureate of South Carolina and the author of Noticing Eden and Despite Gravity. During her visit, she read her children's book Shackles which tells the story of a group of boys searching for buried treasure in Sullivan's Island who dig up an important piece of history. The students loved the story and this incredible time with the author.
