On October 1, Speaker of the SC House of Representatives Bobby Harrell visited Academic Magnet High to present students Lyda Rossi and Eric Bethany with state flags flown over the SC state capitol building. These students have served as the school's flag team this year and have raised and lowered the US flag each day in honor and memory of veterans.  Under the guidance of guidance counselor Jim Yates,  students have observed this tradition at the school and served in this role for three years.

Angel Oak Elementary students and their families participated in the 20th Anniversary Celebration of Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach Services on Johns Island on Saturday, October 17. The mission of this organization is to provide educational, health, housing, and outreach services to people in need on James, Johns, and Wadmalaw Islands. The school's principal Rodney Moore, CCSD ESOL bilingual coordinator Celina Anthony, and ESOL facilitator for the Adult Education program Aimee Herring attended this event to support students and their families.

In an effort to reinforce good manners and kindness towards others, Ft. Johnson Middle counselor Paula Engle has launched a "Random Acts of Kindness" program in which children are recognized for going above and beyond to help other classmates without being asked. Students caught performing random acts of kindness in September were treated to a formal breakfast, catered by Ft. Johnson grandparent Dorris Akers. Guidance staff and administration also attended, praising the students for making Ft. Johnson a kinder place to go to school.

The school year is in full swing at Hunley Park Elementary! Kindergarten students are busy learning about Fall and the changing leaves, while the first graders read all about the moon! Second graders are studying air and weather in science class, and third grade students are learning about the river systems and regions in South Carolina. Fourth grade has been building series of circuits, parallel circuits and electromagnets, and the fifth grade student recently invited guest speaker Dr. Cannick to speak about her journey of becoming a dentist. Ms. Guerry and Ms. Hickman's classes have been busy training for the Special Olympic Bocce Tournament.

Pink is in fashion- and meaningful- at Moultrie Middle! Teachers and other staff members at the school showed their solidarity and support of Breast Cancer Awareness Week in October by wearing their favorite pink attire to school. Throughout the week, school nurse Nancy Baker distributed wristbands and literature that promoted awareness and the importance of early detection and treatment.

McDonald's, at 2050 Savannah Highway, helped Oakland Elementary earn $651.88 on McTeacher's Night held on Tuesday, October 13! Teachers worked the "drive-thru" windows collecting money and serving food. They also manned the cash registers with lots of help from patient McDonald's employees. Students and their families were greeted by Ronald McDonald and enjoyed seeing their teachers in very different roles. Thanks to McDonald's, an invaluable community partner, for its ongoing support and a fun-filled evening!

Students and staff members at Stiles Point Elementary wore pink on Friday, October 16 to honor and remember the mothers, teachers, and partners who have fought breast cancer. This event was sponsored by the Stiles Point Parent Teacher Association (PTA), and over $500 was raised for this important cause. The day reflected tremendous support and promoted awareness.

The Charleston County Early Childhood Education Program is a state-of-the-art, research-based program that is built on current research, methodologies, and best practices. Child Development (CD) teachers Jennifer Liberatos and Barbara German at St. James-Santee Elementary help their young students build a foundation for a continuum of learning through the use of a variety of instructional tools. For example, students practice identifying and painting letters while listening to the pronunciation of the letters. In the classes' science center, students study moths on the school's newly installed SMARTboard and ELMO system.
