On September 25, 2009, the ARMS Academy at Morningside Middle School had a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) celebration for students that have exhibited positive behaviors. During Connections classes, students were allowed to come out and play a variety of sports and games while "purchasing" refreshments with PBIS Star Rewards. A number of community and district members came out to support this event which encourages good behavior and respect for students' school and classmates.

Fifth Grade students at Belle Hall Elementary know their facts, and many of them have now showcased this knowledge on television! In September, 25 fifth grade students were selected to participate in a promotional advertisement for the Fox 24 show “Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader?,” and the shows began airing in late September.

Cario Middle Student Council Members are committed to doing their part for their community and the environment! These students participated in an Isle of Palms Beach Sweep in late September by volunteering their time on a Saturday morning to help clean up trash off local beaches.  It was a great way to support the community, and these young leaders were excited to help.

Local author Jonathan Miller visited Laurel Hill Primary last month to reinforce the joy of reading and explain the work that goes into the many books we love. He read aloud from his book The Adventures of Sammy the Wonder Daschund: Sammy's Last Week in Charleston. He then answered questions the students had about being an author and illustrator and explained why he writes books and how he gets his ideas. The students were excited by this book as "Sammy" visited many local sites.

Mt. Pleasant Academy fourth graders and their second grade teacher Sue Hopkins recently joined author Mary Gordon Kerr for a book signing and reading of her new book What Lies Beneath the Whirlpool of Time. The event was held at Barnes and Noble Towne Centre. The book was written during the 2007-2008 school year with the weekly involvement of the students.

As part of the school's partnership with Mark Curry and the Communities in Schools program, former North Charleston High graduate Christopher Hayes and Representative Wendell Gaillard addressed young male students at the school on Friday, September 25th. Each student was challenged to “take advantage of the new era,” and both speakers’ messages laid heavily on the call for young men of all races and backgrounds to work together, stand up for what is right and good, and vow to make a change for tomorrow. In the silenced cafeteria, the young men were presented with opportunities to partner with mentors and “be remembered not for the problem, but for the solution.”

Last week the Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry (DSAL) in partnership with the Office of Exceptional Children of Charleston County School District had the pleasure of hosting Nancy Brown, an expert on inclusion and differentiated instruction.  She presented with her daughter Bridget, a young woman with Down Syndrome, who is a national speaker and lifelong learner.  She captured the attention of the participants with her vitality, confidence and insight.  Participants had an opportunity to learn the strategies through hands-on activities, and school teams appreciated learning practical strategies with the potential to have an immediate impact on student success.

Mrs. Wooten's first graders at Sanders-Clyde Elementary and Middle have been studying the seasons and the characteristics of Fall. Charleston author and former Media Specialist Fran Hawk recently shared her latest book Count Down to Fall with the students. The children loved the experience and identified various changes that occur with trees and animals.
