On September 8, the Board room of Charleston County School District's central office came to life with the sounds of learning! For the third consecutive year, parents, students, and faculty members of Buist Academy gathered with civic and academic community leaders to discuss the Buist Middle School’s summer reading selection. This year, the selection was Climbing the Stairs by Padma Venkatraman. The Buist community was excited to have Venkatraman on-hand to engage participants in discussion about this extraordinary book.

This year the children at Burns Elementary are going to have an additional class added to their already busy curriculum.  When school nurse Mamie Rader heard offers of help from parents and a nursing instructor at MUSC, she knew she had the necessary people to create an initiative to teach the students about taking care of themselves, avoiding illness, and caring for minor wounds.  Rader is visiting one class every day for 15 minutes to present on a single topic, and each of the school's 28 classes will have four or five health lessons throughout the school year.

Ben Moore, a high school visual arts teacher at School of the Arts recently received national recognition for the high quality of his instruction. His student, Maddie Moore, a current Senior Visual Arts student, received an American Visions Award which is comparable to a national best in show award. In addition, last school year, three of Ben Moore's students scored five (the highest possible level) on their Advanced Placement portfolios, and four other students achieved a four.

Bus drivers at Malcolm Hursey Elementary are passing out "bus bucks" and are participating in the school's Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). The drivers are Raising the Bar with the 3 Rs of the school (Respect, Responsibility and being Ready as a Learner). The students are pleased to receive their bus bucks for great behavior on the bus. Staff members have been practicing safety drills with the students to make sure that each child understands why their good behavior on the bus is important to keeping everyone safe.

Students at St. Andrew's School of Math and Science are reading as much as they possibly can during the month of September! They are competing against other students of their grade level at Drayton Hall Elementary and Ashley River Creative Arts in order to win a ride to school in a fire truck during October 2009, Fire Prevention Month. This exciting opportunity is sponsored by the St. Andrew's Fire Department.
