James Island Middle
On September 3, the James Island Middle Media Center and Principal Hudson hosted a cookout for the school's 74 Summer Readers. These students read four books off the SC Book Awards list during the summer, came in during summer hours or during the first week of school, and passed a quiz on what they had read. While waiting for the burgers, students participated in an activity in which they went to tables where questions related to their summer reading were posted on large pieces of colored paper. Teachers visited the students, ate, and answered the questions.
West Ashley High
The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) students and leaders of West Ashley High School (WAHS) were instrumental in orchestrating the Charleston Relay for Life which took place at the school last spring. The event raised $221,550. To accomplish this feat, over WAHS 40 cadets spent over 24 hours straight working to ensure that everything went smoothly.
Murray-LaSaine Elementary
Murray-LaSaine Elementary School (MLES) kicked off its mentoring program on Thursday, September 3, with a breakfast for mentors and participating students. Volunteers from Charleston County School District, the community, and the MLES teachng staff have committed to one-on-one reading with the children to improve their literacy skills so that every student will be able to excel in and out of the classroom.
Charles Pinckney Elementary
Post and Courier columnist Ken Burger visited Mrs. Henderson's fourth grade writing classes at Pinckney Elementary in Mt. Pleasant in August. He shared his expertise on reporting, writing, and editing news stories. The students are preparing to publish a school newspaper and enjoyed hearing Burger's feedback regarding the newspaper business. Perhaps his most valuable advice was to listen to those you are interviewing- there is always a story there.
St. Andrews Middle
On September 2, Sears Sauls and Steve Wallace of Rick Hendrick Honda donated school supplies and a check for $250 to St. Andrews Middle. The goods were delivered to the teachers for students needing additional supplies, and the monetary funds will help allow the school to provide essential reading and intervention materials for students. Principal Benjamin Bragg accepted the donation on behalf of the school and thanked Hendrick Honda for its ongoing support of public education and its continued focus of helping every child in the West Ashley community become a successful citizen.
North Charleston Elementary
On September 9, North Charleston Elementary held a " Rev it Up for Reading Rally." 17 bikers associated with the Charleston HOG Association rode up to surprise students and read to them. The students were assembled outside and were excited to hear the roar of the engines and see the motorcycles ride in with Principal Vaughn-Brandon, Assistant Principal Couch, and Media Specialist Bobo. The bikers will be keeping in touch with the classes they read to throughout the year and encouraging the children's reading.
