On Friday, August 21, Haut Gap Middle faculty and staff members had a chance to start the year off with a leap into literacy!  The media center sponsored an open house with refreshments, giveaways and a chance to peruse books.  Teachers were invited to dress as their favorite book or movie characters, and they visited during their planning periods to meet the school's new media specialist.  The event allowed teachers to better understand the resources in the media center so they could better refer students and encourage the love of reading!

The staff members of Hursey Elementary were all smiles at the end of the first sensational week of the 2009-2010 school year!  The peace spirit shirt worn by each employee represents the shift to using a Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports model for school-wide discipline. The new model used at the school is called "Peace Happens at Hursey," and it uses the 3 Rs of Respect, Responsibility, and Ready to Learn. The excitement and enthusiasm are contagious and are embraced by the entire school community.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2009, the employees of Jerry Zucker Middle School of Science met at the Ice Palace skating rink in North Charleston for the school's inaugural staff development day. The staff enjoyed getting to know one another and planning an exciting school year for the students of the brand new partial magnet school. Even Principal Sheryl Biss donned a pair of ice skates!

The ten Teacher Cadets at the School of the Arts are ready to begin their year exploring the teaching profession. Throughout the school year, they will be working in classrooms at North Charleston Elementary, Malcolm C. Hursey and School of the Arts Middle and High School. The Teacher Cadet curriculum includes lessons on psychology, human growth and development, history of and issues in education, learning styles, best practices, technology in the classroom, special education, arts in education, and the different types of schools.
