Students Are Swimming in Fun While Learning About Water Safety
Charleston County School District (CCSD) students enrolled in the Burke Community Education’s Summer Camp have been participating in various forms of exercise and have been learning the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. One important component includes swimming lessons and water safety. For the past two years, the Charleston City Gym and Burke Community Education have partnered to make these important lessons a reality.
Each week, 110 campers ranging in age from five to twelve take swimming lessons. The children are students at Mitchell Elementary, Charleston Progressive, Sanders-Clyde Elementary, Fraser Elementary, Mary Ford Elementary and West Ashley Middle. The campers are currently in week four of the eight-week program. Children who previously could not swim are learning how to do so, and students who had previous swimming experience and strengthening their skills and abilities. The campers look forward to the lessons and talk about what they have learned throughout the day.
