We made it:  Congratulations to everyone involved with helping CCSD to complete a successful 2007-2008 school year!   This week, we held our last day of school on Thursday, and although I was consumed by end-of-year activities, I had a series of very productive meetings with colleagues from the Rotary, Trident United Way and the child healthcare and literacy roundtables. Greetings!  We kicked the week off with a Board of Trustees meeting that was memorable for its many student and staff recognitions, including scholarship winners, award-winning athletes, Braille readers and musicians.  The Board also took steps to finalize the hire of our new staff attorney, Mr. John Emerson—welcome aboard, Mr. Emerson!—and approved the appointment of new principals Adrian Busch (St. Johns High School) and Kevin Conklin (Belle Hall Elementary).  Read more...

Some of the highlights included a 2-minute recognition video for our partners at Detyens Shipyard and TE 21 to thank them for the Academic Magnet activity bus! The School Board and audience gave a standing ovation to students who were awarded scholarships and recognized for JROTC distinguished service, oratorical skill, and leadership awards. Read more...

The most sincere sentiment I have to offer as we mark the end of Teacher Appreciation Week is my heartfelt “thank you” to all CCSD teachers.  You are wonderful, and I appreciate every single thing that you do for the children.  Please know that all of us—from central office staff to principals, parents and students—are continuously inspired by your excellence. Excellence was a resounding and oft-repeated theme this week. Read more...

I want to begin by encouraging everyone to please read the commentary I wrote on the Academic Magnet threat situation, which I’m sure many of you heard about over the last couple of weeks.  It is a reflection on today’s world, the importance of trust and partnerships, and lessons learned.  Let me know your thoughts be e-mailing me at superintendent@charleston.k12.sc.usRead more...
