English Language Arts
The mission of English Language Arts education in Charleston County School District is for all students to read on or above grade level and become lifelong readers. Students will become independent, strategic readers in the primary grades and extend these skills at each successive grade level. Instruction will emphasize early literacy development, reading across the content areas and interventions for struggling readers.
Reading Policy #5122.2
- The District will provide teachers with curriculum standards for English language arts in grades K-12 that identifies grade level competencies for all students.
- Each school will establish a comprehensive reading program that ensures effective amd consistent reading instruction for all students.
- The District and schools will provide the necessary support for all students who experience difficulty in reading.
- The District and schools will provide effective staff development for teachers at all grade levels in the teaching of reading.
- The District and schools will make books and other materials necessary for effective teaching and learning of reading available to teachers, parents, and students.
- The District and schools will communicate reading expectations to parents and will assist parents in nurturing reading development.
- Parents will be informed regularly of their child's performance in reading and will be given suggestions to strengthen or enhance their child's reading abilities.
- The District and schools will solicit the participation of the community in appropriate activities that support the development and enhancement of students' reading skills.
- Schools will use appropriate on-going strategies to assess students' performance and progress in reading.
- The District and schools shall annually establish measurable objectives for the improvement of reading achievement as measured on state and national standardized achievement tests.
