Board of Trustees Member Biography

Mr. Raymond Toler

Ray Toler believes in public education…

As a child growing up in Sanford, NC, Ray attended public school, graduating from Sanford Central High in the Class of 1955. Immediately following graduation, Ray joined the Navy and for the next twenty-four years served as a submarine electrician specializing in diesel subs and deep submergence vehicles.

It was the Navy that brought Ray to Charleston, SC in 1960 and again in 1975, and it's been his home ever since. Ray and Barbara, his wife of 42 years, started their family here. All three of their children attended Charleston County Schools and graduated from Stall High School.

After retiring from the Navy in 1978, Ray came to work as an electrician for Charleston County School District. Within a year, he was working in the area of audiovisual repair and in a few years was named Maintenance Foreman over this area. As foreman, Ray oversaw audiovisual and office machine repairs for schools and offices throughout the District. He held this position for 20 years until his retirement just one year ago.

His affinity for public education and his connection to Charleston County Schools did not end there. With his knowledge and experience both as a parent and an employee, Ray felt he could make a meaningful contribution to the District as a County Board member.

Elected in November 2002, Ray considers teachers as the District's #1 priority and has dedicated his tenure on the Board to doing "the best we can for the children."

He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and serves as a volunteer in its Family History Center.
