Mr. Arthur Ravenel, Jr.

Arthur Ravenel, Jr. was born in Charleston in 1927 and raised on a small farm in Charleston County. A product of the public schools, he is a graduate of St. Andrew's High School. After service in the Marine Corps, he attended the College of Charleston on the GI Bill. Graduating in 1950, he went to work as a laborer at the Westvaco paper mill. In 1952, he started a home improvement business and built it into a general contracting and real estate firm. Ravenel was successful enough in business to retire at age 50 to devote his full energies to public service. He has served three terms in the SC House, 14 years in the SC Senate, and four terms in Congress. While in the Senate, he led the effort to put together the funding for the new bridge across Charleston harbor. Residing in Mt. Pleasant, he is married to the former Jean Rickenbaker of Union and is the father of six children.
