Board of Trustees Member Biography

Mr. Gregg Meyers

Born in New Orleans, Gregg first came to know Charleston and its schools through his work job in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. A civil rights case involving the school district brought him here in 1981, and by 1984 he had moved to Charleston. The earliest magnet schools in Charleston arose during discussions to try to resolve that litigation.

Gregg's five children have been in the Charleston County public schools continuously for over twenty years. When his oldest daughter expressed an interest in attending the Academic Magnet High School being established in 1988, the headmaster asked Gregg to lead the school's parent group, which he did for five years. Parents encouraged him to run for the county school board, and he was elected to his first term in 1996. He has been re-elected three times, most recently in November, 2006.

Gregg believes that more effective public schools are better not just for children but also for attracting better businesses and creating better jobs in the community, and strong public schools represent the most productive investment a community can make. His law practice involves many cases concerning child safety and protection. His hobbies include cooking, travel, baseball, and reading.
