Head Start Programs
What are CCSD's Head Start Programs?
Head Start programs were established to provide early, continuous, intensive and comprehensive child development and family support services on a year-round basis.
The purpose of the program is to:
- Enhance children’s physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development
- To support parents’ efforts to fulfill their parental roles
- To help parents move toward self-sufficiency
Can You Tell Me More About the Programs That Were Formerly Under CDI?
In 2008, Community Development Institute (CDI) was named as the temporary grantee (i.e. agency that delivers the services) for the Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. In 2010, the Office of Head Start put out a “Request for Proposals” to identify new grantees for the programs in each of these counties. CCSD applied and was selected to deliver services for Head Start and Early Head Start Centers located in Charleston County beginning in the 2011-2012 school year.
CCSD began overseeing Head Start and Early Head Start in Charleston County on July 1, 2011. CDI and CCSD are working closely together to make this a smooth transition.
